Summary
-
1.
Study has been made of the application of radioactive catalysts in the dehydration of n-dodecyl alcohol on aluminum oxide and on phosphated aluminum oxide.
-
2.
The catalytic activity of phosphated aluminum oxide is reduced by short term irradiation (2 days) in the nuclear reactor but is increased considerably by long term radiation (30 days).
-
3.
Introduction of Ce144 into the aluminum oxide increases the rate of dehydration of n-dodecyl alcohol and the rate of isomerization of α-isomer. Addition of Ce144 to the phosphated aluminum oxide increases the yield of unsaturated hydrocarbons without altering the isomerization of the reaction products.
-
4.
The rates of dehydration and isomerization are increased by irradiating the aluminum oxide and alcohol vapors with high-speed electrons during reaction.
-
5.
It is recommended that Cs137 be used as radioactive additive for increasing the yield of α-dodecylene and reducing the reaction temperatures.
