Abstract
Ketosides of N-glycolyl-d-neuraminic acid have been synthetized by the reaction of 2-chloro-2-desoxy-4,7,8,9-tetra-O-acetyl-N-(O-acetyl-glycolyl)-d-neuraminic acid with various alcohols, and subsequent removal of the O-acetyl groups. They can readily be characterized by their well crystallizing pentaacetyl derivates. They are considered to be α-glycosides because they are cleaved, like the similarly prepared α-ketosides of N-acetyl-d-neuraminic acid, by the neuraminidase ofVibrio cholerae.
