Abstract
In the reaction of diazomethane with compounds of the general structure1 1, cyclopropanes of type2 are formed if no migration of group R takes place. Cyclopropanes of type3 result if group R migrates. In our study of this reaction similar migratory aptitudes of groups R as those known from other rearrangements were found. However, the p-nitrophenyl group shows an unexpected dependence on the solvent: in CH3OH, the expected yield of about 90% of the cyclopropane2d was found, but about 80%3 d in CHCl3. A satisfactory explanation of this fact can not yet be given.
