Abstract
The reaction of NaCN with 2-methoxy-4-formyl-o-quinol acetate (1) and 2-methoxy-5-formyl-o-quinol acetate (2) differs fundamentally from that with the corresponding dimethyl substituted quinol acetates. With1 the type of reaction products formed depends to a great extent on the solvent used: in methanol1 yields 3-hydroxy-4-cyano-benzoic acid methylester, inDMF, however, 2-cyano-3-methoxy-4-hydroxybenzaldehyde. The behaviour of2 is simpler: no addition of the CN ion to the quinol system occurs. Isovanillic acid or the corresponding methyl ester is formed.
