Reaction mechanism of hydrated calcium oxide with quartz under practical conditions

  • Published:
Bulletin of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Division of chemical science Aims and scope

Summary

  1. 1.

X-ray studies have not confirmed the idea found in the literature that hydrosilicates are formed when sand reacts with lime solution. The principal new substance formed is always found to be calcite crystals.

  2. 2.

It is pointed out that a quartz crystal must be regarded as a real practical crystal, and its surface must be regarded as a real practical surface.

  3. 3.

On this basis an explanation is given of how strength is built up in the stone formed after prolonged reaction of sand with lime solution.
