Summary
-
1.
A study has been made of the dehydration of alcohols in the presence of iron phosphate using cyclohexanol, hexanol-1, butanol-1, and propanol-2.
-
2.
At 380°–400°, the yields of unsaturated products reach 95%, the activity of the contact remaining good even after having operated for a long time without regeneration.
-
3.
The unsaturated products of the dehydration quickly isomerize, the degree of isomerization increasing with increase in temperature and with increase in the number of carbon atoms in the molecule.
-
4.
From kinetic data, the apparent activation energy for the dehydration of propanol-2 has been calculated to be ɛ=21.5 kcal/M and for the isomerization of cyclohexane, ɛ=9.2 kcal/M.
-
5.
A proposed mechanism is given for the contact transformations.
