Carbon suboxide (C3O2) reacts with primary and secondary enamines, readily prepared from β-ketoesters or β-diketones, to give derivatives of 4-hydroxy-2-pyridone. The reaction mechanism, structure and the infrared and ultraviolet spectra are discussed.
