Zur Kinetik der spontanen und der gestarteten radikalischen Polymerisation von o-Chlorstyrol

Zusammenfassung

Die Kinetik der Polymerisation von o-Chlorstyrol bei 30°C zeigt sowohl hinsichtlich der Polymerisationsgeschwindigkeiten als auch der Polymerisationsgrade Abweichungen von dem Verhalten, das für Additivität der Startgeschwindigkeiten zu erwarten wäre, wie sie einerseits durch spontane thermische Radikalbildung im Monomeren, andererseits durch Starterzerfall hervorgerufen werden. Dabei nimmt mit steigender Polymerisations-geschwindigkeit der Beitrag des spontanen Starts ab und die Polymerisationsgrade durchlaufen ein Maximum.

Diese Effekte können durch ein Eingreifen der Radikalketten in den Prozeß der spontanen Radikalbildung erklärt werden, das in Form einer Übertragungsreaktion mit dem nachMayo auch für den thermischen Start verantwortlichenDiels-Alder-Zwischenprodukt aus zwei Monomermolekülen erfolgt.

Abstract

The kinetics of o-chlorostyrene polymerization shows deviations from the behavior expected for additivity of the spontaneous initiation reaction taking place in the monomer and the radical formation produced by the decay of the initiator, regarding the reaction rates as well as the degrees of polymerization: If the rate of polymerization is increased the contribution from the spontaneous initiation decreases and degrees of polymerization pass through a maximum value.

These kinetic features can be explained by an interference of the radical chains with the spontaneous initiation reaction. This interference is due to a chain transfer reaction to the adduct which is formed byDiels-Alder reaction between two monomer molecules and which (according toMayo) is also responsible for the spontaneous initiation of polymerization.
