Abstract

The binding energy shifts of some 35 elements on formation of an oxide have been measured by X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy. When these are plotted against the atomic numbers of the elements or against the heat of formation of the oxides, characteristic trends can be observed, for the interpretation of which a number of rules of general validity may be drawn up.
