Summary
-
1.
Data are given on the quality and quantity of the chromosomal polymorphism in a population ofDrosophila subobscura from Dröbak (Norway).
-
2.
The Norwegian population shows the characteristics of a marginal population. Compared with the Middle- and South-European populations the chromosomal variability is considerably reduced.
-
3.
An apparently high number of females and males of the Norwegian wild population did not produce offspring in the laboratory.
-
4.
Intercrosses of different strains ofDrosophila subobscura from Norway and from various other localities were made. All different groups of intercrosses produced fertile F1 progenies. However, the frequency of successful single pair crosses was significantly lower if males from the Norwegian strain were used. It may be assumed to be due to the low developmental homeostasis of the Norwegian strain not adapted to the laboratory environments.
