Abstract
The conservation of the adiabatic invariant of a charged particle, entrapped by a transverse plane electromagnetic wave, is studied using a well-known method, both for the case when the phase velocity of the wave does not exceed the velocity of light, and for the opposite case. An expression is obtained for the variation of the adiabatic invariant, from which it is seen that the latter is conserved with exponential accuracy in the region of its existence.
