Alloy aging by discontinuous deposition

  • Published:
Soviet Physics Journal Aims and scope

Conclusions

Discontinuous deposition and coagulation are common phenomena; they are no less significant than heterogeneous decomposition in the thermodynamics of phase transitions [89], since various flaws in crystal structure are involved. Provided the conditions are appropriate, the reaction is to be expected in almost any system; this makes it exceptionally important to define more closely the factors that determine the occurrence of the reaction. It is widely believed that discontinuous deposition is harmful, but this is a one-sided view, and generally incorrect. The process can be utilized to produce a fine-grained structure, in particular with a high elastic limit. The practical importance of discontinuous decomposition in such cases is governed by the shape taken by the particles in the cells together with the state of the grain boundaries.
