Debye temperature and lattice energy of solid solutions of KI-KBr and KCl-RbCl

Abstract

Using a two-component oscillator, the elastic constants of KI-KBr and KCl-RbCl solid solutions are determined. By extrapolating the elastic constants to 0°K (using a computer), the Debye temperatures of these solid solutions are evaluated. From experimentally-measured values of the compressibility and volume-expansion coefficients of these solid solutions, the constant in the expression for the repulsion energy and the equilibrium distance between neighboring ions are calculated. A computer calculation is carried out for the lattice energy of the solid solutions on the basis of the Durham and Hawkins model. Both the Debye temperature and the lattice energy exhibit a negative deviation from the simple additive law when plotted against the composition of the solid solutions.
