Abstract
An oscilloscope has been used to examine the breakdown in helium in a slightly inhomogeneous field. There is a stepwise voltage drop, and there are three critical regions for this as the overvoltage increases from 30 to 100%. For overvoltages in the range 50–55%, step 1 with amplitude (0.7–0.8)U degenerates into a step with amplitude (0.3–0.4)Uo.
