Abstract
A gas-discharge system is described in which the transverse extension of a normal glow discharge is utilized to induce feedback-free triggering of a previously non-conducting discharge section. A calculation of the experimental configuration on the assumption that a field distortion penetrates from the active discharge into the activated section, thus lowering its ignition voltage, gives good agreement with the measured results.
It is concluded that the basic principle of control could be applied to gas-discharge-like breakdown phenomena in solids, too.
