Summary

  1. 1.

The method for the analysis of pollen tetrads inSalpiglossis variabilis which was introduced byKappert in 1938 and developped to a higher effectiveness byReimann-Phillip in 1955 could be improved furthermore.

  2. 2.

By means of a special technique it was possible to include in the analysis of the tetrads 3 of the 4 described genes. Moreover one of the three genes was used together with the remaining fourth gene as a genetic marker.

  3. 3.

Altogether 88 tetrads with 3 or 4 and 170 tetrads with 2 descending individuals could be analysed. The frequency of recombination was about 3% for the locuslutea and about 7% for the locusappendiculata. Evidence of second division segregation of the locuschlorina could be given only by one tetrad occurring among those with 2 descendants. This exceptional tetrad was assumed to be the result of a gene-conversion rather than of an gene-recombination which happens very rarely due to a close linkage betweenchlorina and its centromere. It was the main purpose of these experiments to find a centromer-marker of this type for mapping the centromeres of all free segregating loci.

  4. 4.

As well as in the experiments in Berlin-Dahlem (1952–1954), some tetrads were found with a deviating ratio of segregation in the involved characters. In order to explain these findings conversion was assumed to happen sometimes affecting the lociappendiculata, venosa and probablychlorina too.
