Abstract
The influence of axial magnetic fields on ion-laser discharges of large diameter (tube radiusR=0.6 cm) has been investigated. At modest power levels (jR<50A/cm,j: current density) laser output could be increased by about a factor of 2. The optimum magnetic field\(\hat B_z \) was found to follow the relation:\(\hat B_z R = const. \simeq 150\) [Gcm]. At high power levels (jR>150 A/cm) axial magnetic fields cannot increase the laser output.
