Calculation of the stress intensity factors with the use of isoparametric quadratic elements

Soviet Applied Mechanics Aims and scope

Conclusions

The numerical experiments carried out show that the use of quadratic isoparametric elements is very effective for the calculation of the stress intensity factor. Results that are acceptable in practice can be obtained for a small number of degrees of freedom (of the order 250–300). It is advisable to integrate the stiffness matrices for two points in each direction, thus reducing the time for forming a system of equilibrium equations by a factor of two. The use of singular elements is very advantageous; it allows us to compute the intensity factor by the direct method of displacements. In this case comparison of the results obtained by the direct and energy methods provides confidence in the correctness of the results for geometries with unknown solutions.
