Additional information

Editor's note: The opening address and keynote papers of the 28th US Rock Mechanics Symposium, held at the University of Arizona, Tucson, were not included in the Proceedings (Rock Mechanics: Proceedings of the 28th US Symposium. Editors I.W. Farmer, J.J.K. Daemen, C.S. Desai, C.E. Glass, S.P. Newman, Rotterdam, Balkema, 1987, 1240 pp). The opening address by A.A. Bello Maldonado, Vice President ISRM, North America, is reproduced here in edited form. The keynote papers by J.A. Franklin, B. Ladanyi and W. Wittke are major contributions to the literature and are reproduced in full. The 2nd Mexico-USA Bi-National Rock Mechanics Symposium was held concurrently with the 28th US Symposium. The subject of this Symposium was the 1985 Mexico City earthquake, with emphasis on rock mechanics aspects. This will be published later as a special edition of the International Journal of Mining and Geological Engineering.
