Conclusions
-
1.
In the spectra of solutions of a mixture of complexes of POCl3 and POBr3 with phenol or p-cresol and the free molecules in CCl4, together with the appearance of associated P=O and OH bonds, supplementary absorption was observed in the region of the P-Hal bond.
-
2.
The indicated absorption is related to a strengthening of the P-Hal bond, due to displacement of the electrons of the halogen atom in the direction of phosphorus.
-
3.
The inductive influence cannot entirely explain the observed effect. The possibility of partial displacement of the electron clouds of the unshared electron pairs of the halogen atom in the direction of phosphorus is also assumed.
