The contribution of the heterogeneous reaction to the rate of the gas phase decomposition of nitroethane, 1-nitropropane, and 2-nitropropane was determined by varying the ratio of the surface to the volume of the reaction vessel (S/V).

The activation energies of the homogeneous decomposition of the enumerated compounds differ from the literature data.
