Conclusions

  1. 1.

    The C=O group of benzaldehyde is reduced first on Rh and Co catalysts. On Rh-Al2O3 the formed benzyl alcohol undergoes hydrogenolysis at the C-OH bond and is hydrogenated in the aromatic ring. Only hydrogenolysis is observed on Co catalysts.

     
  2. 2.

    Benzaldehyde deactivates skeletal Co relative to the hydrogenation of the aromatic ring.

     
  3. 3.

    Skeletal Co is more active than Rh-Al2O3 in the hydrogenation of the C=O group of benzaldehyde.
