Conclusions

A new method is proposed for the synthesis of copolymers of vinyl monomers with acids of the acrylic series; it is based on the use of the “silylation-desilylation” principle, viz., silylation of the carboxyl groups in the monomeric acids, and desilylation of the side-chain, silicon-containing ester groups in the copolymers.

Carboxyl-containing styrene-methyl methacrylate copolymers with various percentages of unsaturated acid links were synthesized in high yields.
