Conclusions

  1. 1.

The kinetic principles of the hydrolysis of mesitylenesulfonic acid in 45.31–79.84% H2SO4 were studied spectrophotometrically.

  2. 2.

In aqueous solution at a given concentration of H2SO4, the rates of hydrolysis and sulfonation obey first-order equations with respect to mesitylenesulfonic acid and mesitylene, respectively. When the H2SO4 concentration in aqueous solution is varied, the effective rate constants of hydrolysis change in proportion to the product of the acidity of the medium by the concentration of “free” water in solution.

  3. 3.

An equation was obtained for describing the dependence of the effective rate constant of sulfonation on the H2SO4 concentration in aqueous solution.
