Conclusions

  1. 1.

    The yield of dialkyl carbonates in the carbonylation of propanol and butanol increases in a linear manner with increase in the amount of Hg(OCOCH3)2 taken for reaction. Here 0.3–0.4 mole of the alkyl carbonate is formed per mole of reacted Hg(OCOCH3)2.

     
  2. 2.

    The presence of an oxidizing agent in the reaction system inhibits the carbonylation reaction and the reduction of the Hg2+.
