Conclusions
-
1.
The modifying action of cadmium (and zinc) cations on a Ni-Al2O3 catalyst with respect to the direction of addition of hydrogen to crotonylidenacetone is similar to the action of metallic cadmium.
-
2.
The modifying action of cadmium and zinc ions is specific. In contrast to these cations, treatment of a nickel catalyst with silver acetate has no influence on the direction of the addition of hydrogen to the dienone.
-
3.
Under conditions of hydrogenation in the presence of a Ni-Al2O3 catalyst, the cadmium cation is not reduced to the metal.
