Conclusions

A study was made of the mechanism of the hydration ofα nitrocrotonic ester in water at pH 1.0–3.0. A multistep scheme was proposed for the process, where the limiting step is the protonation of the intermediately formed C-anion of α-nitro-β-hydroxybutyric ester.
