Summary
-
1.
The action of selenious acid on 3-carene in ethanolic solution was studied. It results in the formation of a complex mixture, consisting of p-isopropenyltoluene, p-mentha-l,5-dien-8-ol, the ethyl ether of a dienol (probably p-mentha-l,5-dien-8-ol), p-cymen-8-ol, and unidentified compound of the carane series, and an unsaturated (+)-ketone, suggested to be 3(10)-caren-2-one.

2.
3-Caren-10-ol was not found in the products of the oxidation of 3-carene with selenious acid.
