    The bromination of furfural with two moles of bromine in the presence of two moles of aluminum chloride gives 4,5-dibromofurfural as a solid product.

  2. 2.

    When furfural is brominated with two moles of bromine in dichloroethane without the aluminum chloride the main portion of the product is converted to a tar and only a very small yield of 5-bromofurfural is obtained.
