Summary

  1. 1.

An investigation was made of the destructive hydropolymerization of olefins in their hydrogenation over a cobalt catalyst at 200° in order to determine the nature of the initiators of this reaction.

  2. 2.

For the case of ethylene, butene, and isobutene it was shown that at 200° and atmospheric pressure over a Co-ThO2-kieselguhr catalyst only the hydrogenation of the olefin into the corresponding paraffin occurs without any accompanying hydropolymierization or hydrogenolysis if the starting gas mixture does not contain traces of CO and O2 (not more than 0.01%).

  3. 3.

Under the conditions of the destructive hydropolymerization of olefins the paraffins ethane and butane do not undergo hydrogenolysis.

  4. 4.

When there is no CO in the starting mixture the initiators of the destructive hydropolymerization of olefins are methylene and hydroxymethylene radicals-products of the incomplete reduction of carbon monoxide formed by the oxidation of the hydrocarbons by oxygen impurity.
