Adsorption of pyridine on mercury from neutral solutions of KCl

Summary

  1. 1.

Measurements were made of the electrocapillary curves and curves of the differential capacity of the double layer on a mercury electrode in neutral solutions of KCl with various amounts of pyridine added.

  2. 2.

With high negative charges on the mercury surface the adsorbed pyridine molecules are oriented vertically and attractive forces between them predominate, leading to an S-shaped adsorption isotherm. With a decrease in the negative charge of the mercury and a further change to positive charges, the attractive interaction between the adsorbed pyridine molecules changes into mutual repulsion. Under these conditions, with a sufficient decrease in the degree of filling there occurs reorientation of the pyridine molecules, leading to their lying flat on the surface and a π-electron interaction arising with the positive charges of the mercury.
