Summary
-
1.
An investigation was made of the peculiarities of skeletal Ni-Al. Co-Al, Pd-Al, and Pt-Al catalyst in the vapor-phase hydrogenation of 2-acctyl-5-methylfuran at 200' and 300'.
-
2.
The Co-Al catalyst selectively promotes the reduction of the carbonyl group of 2-acetyl-5-methylfuran to a CH2 group, and Pd-Al selectively promotes hydrogenolysis of the furan ring with formation of 3-methylcyclohexanone.
-
3.
Under comparable conditions skeletal Pt-Al and Ni-Al catalysts promote both the reduction of 2-acetyl-5-methylfuran to 2-ethyl-5-methylruran and also the hydrogenolysis of 2-acetyl-5-methylfuran with formation, depending on the temperature, of 3-methylcyclohexanone or m-cresol.
