Determination of the absorption coefficient in studies on diffusion in metal oxides

Summary

  1. 1.

    An empirical relationship has been derived for the linear absorption coefficient of tracer radiation as a function of the density of the substance in which the diffusion of the tracer is studied; this relationship permits calculation of absorption coefficients from measurements on the absorption of tracer radiation. These absorption coefficients must be known to permit determination of diffusion coefficients in solids by means of radioactive tracers.

    Application of absorption coefficients calculated from the above relationship to the evaluation of data on the diffusion of iron in titanium dioxide and iron oxides yielded values for the diffusion coefficient which are in good agreement with those found by means of the method of layer stripping.
