Abstract
Relaxation arising from one-phonon processes is considered for crystals in which the rare-earth ion (minor component) is enclosed in a cube consisting of eight diamagnetic particles. The relaxation time is estimated for Yb3+ in CaF2; the discrepancy between theory and experiment is discussed.
