Effect of nitriding on the corrosion resistance of stainless steels

Metal Science and Heat Treatment of Metals Aims and scope

Summary

  1. 1.

The variation of corrosion resistance of nitrided layers with the thickness of the layer removed corresponds to the change in electrode potential.

  2. 2.

Four zones have been detected within the thickness of the nitride coating on stainless steels, with different corrosion resistances and electrode potentials.

  3. 3.

It is suggested that the layers with lowered corrosion resistance and electrode potential found at a certain depth below the original surface of nitrided stainless steels consist of chromium nitride and a solid solution, depleted in chromium and low in nitrogen.

  4. 4.

In preparing components from nitrided stainless steels, after grinding and lapping, allowance must be made for the thickness of the zones with high and reduced corrosion resistance.
