The effect of a normal load on the electrical conductivity of a contact

  • Published:
Soviet Physics Journal Aims and scope

Abstract

The electrical conductivity of a contact whose magnitude characterized the true contact area of two surfaces was investigated. It is shown that in the case of metallic or quasi-metallic contacts the rate of growth of conductivity remains practically constant within a certain range of loads, after which it slows down. Hysteresis of the conductivity curves was noted. The area of the hysteresis loop is suggested as a method of evaluating the adhesive tendency of metals.
