A method is proposed, which allows sub-Doppler spectroscopy by means of correlation between photons emitted in atomic cascades. No laser sources are necessary and lineshapes in the absence of strong perturbing electromagnetic fields can be investigated.

This work is dedicated to the memory of the late V. A. Rapisarda. The possible application of photon correlation to high-resolution spectroscopy came out from stimulating and friendly discussions with him just before he suddendly passed away
