Conclusions
By solving the problem of the interference of Gaussian beams, we obtained formulas for the calculation of the systematic error which is made when a laser-type Michelson interferometer is used to measure length. We gave recommendations on the geometrical dimensions of the Michelson interferometer and its matching to the laser radiation so that the above error is reduced. We have described the experimental verification of our formulas.
