Reaction of titanium with nitrogen during heating by radiant energy

  • Published:
Soviet Powder Metallurgy and Metal Ceramics Aims and scope

Conclusions

Use of radiant energy as a source of heat intensifies the nitriding of titanium. The phase composition, thickness, and properties of diffusion layers depend, at any given temperature, on the nature of the heat source and on the activity of the atmosphere. The mechanism of photoactivation of the surface of a metal specimen consists in changing the concentration of crystal lattice structure defects, which promotes diffusion of nonmetal anions into the specimen.
