Conclusions

  1. 1.

The experimental evidence shown suggests a close analogy between various anomalies observed in the initial deformation stage. It thus appears that all these effects are due to a single cause (deformation mechanism).

  2. 2.

In its early stages plastic deformation of polycrystalline metals consists mainly of intergranular displacements which are replaced later by slip.

  3. 3.

With increasing purity and grain size, the intergranular deformation processes are superseded by slip at smaller strains.

  4. 4.

In pure and coarse-grained metals which undergo deformation by intracrystalline slip almost from the beginning, these anomalies vanish or are found at very small strains only.
