Abstract

3-Hydroxy-3-phenyl-quinoline-2,4-diones (1) cyclize on treatment with strong acids to give benzofuroquinolones (3). In analogy, 2-hydroxy-2-phenylphenalenedione (7) furnishes the benzofurophenalenone10.
