High-temperature oxidation of the nitrides of the Groups IV and V transition metals

I. Oxidation of titanium nitride

Soviet Powder Metallurgy and Metal Ceramics Aims and scope

Conclusions

  1. 1.

A study was made of the high-temperature oxidation of dense titanium nitride specimens in air at temperatures ranging from 500 to 1200°C.

  2. 2.

It was established that the oxidation of TIN is accompanied by titanium and nitrogen liberation, which is a consequence of the specific character of the formation of oxynitride phases during the dissolution of oxygen in the lattice of the nitride.

  3. 3.

It was found that the good oxidation resistance of TIN over the temperature range 500–1200°C is due to the formation at the scale/nitride boundary of a layer of an oxynitride phase having a larger lattice constant and higher microhardness compared with TiN.
