Metamorphoses of Latvian landscapes during fifty years of Soviet rule

Abstract

The essay examines changes that have occurred in the landscapes of Latvia during fifty years of communist rule. The essence of these changes was to inscribe in landscapes politicised and ideologised social and economic models of the Soviet Union. The principal features of these inscriptions were the forced development of urbanisation, the creation of large, industrial farms, and the massive melioration of agricultural lands. These activities created a polarised landscape structure in Latvia: next to heavily anthropogenised landscapes there are little affected landscapes in which processes of reversion to more natural states can be observed. Such polarisation also changed the spatial (regional) configuration of Latvia.
