Effect of high-temperature heating on the structure and properties of molybdenum disilicide heating elements

  • Published:
Soviet Powder Metallurgy and Metal Ceramics Aims and scope

Conclusions

The variations in the mechanical characteristics of heating elements are linked with certain structural changes occurring during high-temperature heating, namely, intense growth of molybdenum disilicide grains, formation of voids and blow holes, and aggregation of the ceramic constitutent in the form of large inclusions. The grain growth is a purely diffusional process; the presence of the ceramic phase does not affect the grain growth, although it probably extends the incubation period (to 10 h).
