Normal modulus of elasticity of silicon nitride whiskers

Conclusions

  1. 1.

    Measurements were made of the normal modulus of elasticity of α-Si3N4 whiskers of three crystallographic orientations: E5°K〈0001〉 =47,390, E〈1¯2¯12〉 =38,530, and E 〈¯2421〉 =49,750 kg/mm2.

     
  2. 2.

    On the basis of these measurements, the following values of compliance were obtained by calculation: S11 = 1.99·10−13, S33 = 2.12 ·10−13, and (S44 + 2S13) = 8.44 · 10−13 cm2/dyn.
