Preparation of pyronocondensed pyrones and pyridones by applying the Kappe-Mayer modification of the von Pechmann-reaction

Abstract

TheKappe-Mayer variation of thevon-Pechmann-reaction has been applied to synthesize fluorescent heterocyclics (2, 4, 6) together with two novel, highly fluorescent ring systems (7, 8). Condensation was achieved by heating several 4-hydroxy-2-pyrones or 4-hydroxy-2-pyridones with di fferent β-ketoesters in the presence of ammonium acetate in dimethyl sulfoxide solution.

7 and8 are also accessible from 5,6-benzo-4-hydroxycoumarin and malonylcarbazol, resp., by thermal condensation with ethyl β-amino-crotonate.
