Mechanism of the initial stage of the metal carbidization process — A review

  • Published:
Soviet Powder Metallurgy and Metal Ceramics Aims and scope

Conclusions

  1. 1.

An examination is made of the mechanisms involved in the reactions occurring on the surfaces of carbonaceous substances and metals being impregnated, during carbidization from a solid-phase bath in a hydrogen atmosphere. It is shown that the rate of formation of atomic carbon on a metallic surface depends upon the reactivity of the metal, the nature of the hydrocarbons being adsorbed, and the process temperature.

  2. 2.

The effects are considered of structural heterogeneities and common impurities upon the processes of formation of hydrocarbons and the character of their reactions with metals.
