Densification kinetics in the hot pressing of a hard-metal base composite material

Conclusions

An investigation into the kinetics of densification in the hot pressing of a composite material consisting of silicon carbide and a VK6 hard-metal matrix has shown that in a low-temperature range, 1373–1423 K, the flow of the solid phase of such a porous material obeys a nonlinear law with a coefficient of nonlinearity of flow n=4. In a high-temperature range, 1523–1673 K, densification is strongly influenced by the counterpressure of gas trapped in pores, which in the final stage can attain values equal to that of applied pressure, thereby bringing densification to an end. An analytical description of the process is proposed.
