Conclusions
-
1.
A study was made of some properties of materials of the system silicon nitride-zirconium dioxide (stabilized with CaO). Specimens for investigation were prepared by the method of hot casting. The amount of binder required was found to be a linear function of the composition of the materials.
-
2.
At a porosity of 20–26%, silicon nitride-zirconium dioxide materials possess good oxidation and thermal fatigue resistance. The latter is linked with their low coefficient of thermal expansion (3.2–7.2).
-
3.
The impact strength of the materials attains a value of 8.2 kg·cm/cm2 and is thus much higher than that of technical ceramics.
-
4.
The compressive strength of the materials grows with rise in ZrO2 content, but the resultant improved strength sharply falls after only five thermal cycles.
