Role of brittle layers in the behavior of fiber composite materials at elevated temperatures

Soviet Powder Metallurgy and Metal Ceramics Aims and scope

Conclusions

  1. 1.

It has been confirmed that the curve of strength vs transition zone thickness for a composite consists of two distinct portions: I) a portion of structural stability, within which an increase in layer thickness does not lead to a loss of strength of the composite, and II) a portion characterized by loss of strength.

  2. 2.

It has been established that the fibers of an aluminum/steel-fiber composite subjected to a tensile load fracture in a tough manner within the limits of portion I and in a brittle manner within the limits of portion II.
